Lots of folks are using the new Ptolus Chatbot which I rolled out. It’s based on ChatGPT and I’m calling it the Iron Mage since this

is a Ptolus focused channel and it’s on the Ptol dot us website. Thank you so much to all you past patrons who have been supporting me

and thank you to all the new sign ups who have joined in order to gain access to the Ptolus Chatbot.

I’m only requiring the $5/month Patreon membership because using the ChatGPT Open AI system is not free. I have to pay them for the answers

that are generated by the Iron Mage chat bot. At some point I want the bot to automatically show up for someone as soon as they sign up,

but I haven’t gotten that programming done yet as I’ve been focused on making the chat bot as awesome as possible.

Now, let’s play with the Iron Mage chat bot a little bit to show you some of what it can do. As a disclaimer, this is an ai tool, so it’s not perfect.

ChatGPT has a big disclaimer on its website saying that ai can often be wrong. I’ve had this bot already make some mistakes, but I’m still loving using it for my campaign!

Ask Ptolus Campaign Setting Questions

First, you can just ask campaign setting questions, like are there any bath houses in Ptolus where my players can get cleaned up?

Remember that the only information available to the bot at this time is content from the Ptolus PDF campaign settings. So none of our homebrew locations have been added yet.

Get Ptolus NPC Recommendations and Details

Second, you could ask it to tell you about a notable NPC your characters might encounter.

Descriptions of Ptolus Events

Third, you could ask it for a description of the current happenings in one of the locations. For example, in the Calling campaign they are constantly going into the Ghostly Minstrel.

I’m sure your PCs are doing the same. So one prompt I like is, Describe the common room of the Ghostly Minstrel and give me at least one interesting NPC for my players to notice.

Now, let’s say you don’t want to use a normal Ptolus Named NPC from the book. Change the prompt to say:

Describe the common room of the Ghostly Minstrel and make up one interesting NPC for my players to notice who is not from the Ptolus book

Ptolus Random Encounter Generator

Fourth, you can ask the Iron Mage to give you a random encounter while your characters are traveling from one place to another. For example:

Describe the walk from the Ghostly Minstrel to the Rogue Moon Trading company and have one interesting thing happen for them to see while they walk.

If you haven’t seen it before, I actually have a random encounter generator on the website. I have added a bunch of homebrew content to these as well. (https://ptol.us/ptolus-random-encounter-generator/)

and I even have an area for you to submit homebrew ones as well. I don’t have this homebrew content included in the bot yet, but I will!

Generate Ptolus Artwork Someday Soon

Fifth, sometime soon the chat bot will also be able to generate images for you. The ChatGPT system that makes images is called DALL-E and it uses a different API

than the content output one. So I’m working on that as well! I know there are a lot of ethics around ai generated artwork so I always suggest trying to

find artwork by real people who you can support. But sometimes you need something that doesn’t exits and ai can pop something out that will work for your campaign.

I hope this new chatbot will help make it much easier for people to run a Ptolus campaign. The book is over 800 pages, so it’s daunting!

But hopefully with the Iron Mage by your side, it will make things much easier!

For all the folks currently using the Ptolus ChatBot please send me all your feedback, good and bad.

I want to make this thing as awesome as possible for all you Epic Level Narrators!
